Despite covering 70% of the Earth’s surface, water—one of our most essential resources—is increasingly being transformed into a vehicle for disease and destruction.
Water pollution occurs when harmful substances—ranging from floating plastics to industrial chemicals—are introduced into water bodies such as lakes, rivers, and oceans. These pollutants often dissolve easily due to water’s natural solvent properties, quickly degrading water quality and harming aquatic life. The effects are devastating, not just to marine and freshwater ecosystems, but to humans as well. According to The Economist, more than 1,000 children in India die each day from diarrhea caused by contaminated water—a tragic reality echoed in many developing regions worldwide.
