As reported by Repsol in their article “What is waste recovery?”, innovative waste recovery methods are gaining global traction as essential components of the circular economy. These methods—including recycling, reuse, and energy conversion—offer a sustainable way to reduce landfill waste while creating new value.
The article highlights that waste recovery is not only an environmental imperative but also an economic opportunity. By extending the lifecycle of products and converting waste into energy or raw materials, recovery operations dramatically cut down the volume of waste destined for landfills. In 2021 alone, Spain generated approximately 138 million metric tons of waste—yet only 15% was recycled. Had waste recovery strategies been broadly implemented, a significant portion could have been diverted from landfills, contributing to a more efficient, zero-waste system.
