As highlighted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their article, “Electronics Donation and Recycling,” electronic products are made using valuable materials such as metals, plastics, and glass. Recycling or donating electronics not only conserves natural resources but also reduces air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions associated with manufacturing new materials.
Recycling electronics has significant environmental benefits. For example, recycling one million laptops saves energy equivalent to powering over 3,500 U.S. homes annually. Additionally, recycling one million cell phones can recover substantial amounts of valuable materials, including 35,000 pounds of copper and 75 pounds of gold, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.
Before donating or recycling electronics, ensure that all personal information is deleted from devices, and batteries are removed for separate recycling. Lithium-ion batteries, in particular, must be handled properly and should never be discarded in household trash. Check local recycling facilities for proper disposal and donation options.
