Safe Solutions for Managing Radioactive Materials

As outlined in the University of Toronto’s Environmental Health & Safety manual “Radioactive Waste Disposal”, radioactive waste must be managed under strict regulatory controls to ensure safety and environmental protection.

Radioactive waste at the university is managed under a consolidated NSRD license, with materials either shipped to AECL Waste Management Systems or licensed contractors for disposal, or held for decay when applicable. The scope of radioactive waste includes both direct sources (such as sealed radioisotopes) and items that come into contact with radioactive materials, including contaminated lab tools, protective gear, or decontamination supplies like paper towels and sponges.
