As reported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their “National Overview: Facts and Figures on Materials, Wastes and Recycling”, the United States generated over 292 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2018. Of this, about 69 million tons were recycled and 25 million tons composted, reflecting the growing importance of sustainable materials management.
The data highlights both progress and challenges: while recycling rates have improved since the 1960s, continued innovation and investment are needed to reduce landfill dependence.
