As highlighted in Umeå University’s report on “Chemicals and Waste Management,” the annual use of chemicals generates approximately 8,000 kilos of hazardous waste. To mitigate the negative impact on the environment and human health, active efforts are underway to substitute hazardous substances with less dangerous alternatives. This strategic approach includes setting requirements on the chemical content of products in procurement and purchase processes.
In addition to hazardous waste, the university generates around 350 tonnes of other waste annually, which includes solid waste incinerated as well as electronic waste. Efforts are being made to address this challenge by implementing sustainable waste management practices. This includes increasing material reuse, especially during renovation and rebuilding projects.
The university’s action plan for climate and sustainability outlines strategic goals and activities for the period 2021-2023. Key to achieving these goals is the involvement of stakeholders, particularly in the focus area of chemicals and waste management.
