As emphasized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in their guide “How to Safely Dispose of E-Cigarettes: Information for Individuals,” e-cigarettes and vaping devices must never be thrown in household trash or recycling bins. These devices contain toxic nicotine and lithium batteries, making them hazardous to both people and the environment.
E-cigarettes—also known as vapes, vape pens, e-hookahs, and ENDS (Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems)—are often deceptively sleek, mimicking USB drives or pens. However, their internal components are far from harmless. Lithium-ion batteries inside can become damaged during waste handling, leading to fires in compactors, garbage trucks, and recycling centers. Meanwhile, nicotine residue is highly toxic, with potential to poison humans and harm aquatic ecosystems.
