As reported by Conserve Energy Future in their article “15 Daily Habits of Human Beings That are Slowly Killing the Environment,” it takes only 3 weeks to form a habit, yet many of our everyday practices are detrimental to the environment.
One of the most significant issues is driving. With 282.3 million motor vehicles in the United States alone, the environmental impact from gasoline fumes is substantial. Globally, the problem is exacerbated by the growing number of vehicles. To mitigate this, people should consider carpooling, using public transportation, or switching to zero-emission electric vehicles.
Improper disposal of batteries and ink cartridges is another harmful habit. Household batteries contain mercury and other toxic chemicals that can damage ecosystems. Ink cartridges often contain VOCs and heavy metals, which can poison soil and water, degrading the environment. The chemicals in these items can accumulate in wildlife, causing further harm through biomagnification.
The excessive use of plastic is also a major concern. Shopping often results in acquiring multiple plastic bags, which are a major pollutant due to their inability to degrade naturally, with lifecycles extending to millennia. Reducing plastic use and finding alternative packaging solutions is crucial.
